Free calls ?

Google now has a new 'communication tool' out. 'Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages.' With a 900K download you can access E-mails, IM or call. This new form of  VoIP could develop into a competition with Skype.

Emergent culture

Jimmy Wales from Wikipedia pronounced free culture at the recent 'First International Wikimedia Conference' in Frankfurt.The idea of 'Ten Things That Will Be Free!' will change culture as we have known it. Very exciting prospects, worth a plough though!

Global Voices Online ensures that heteroglossia has a presence in the blogsphere.The voice of the 'other' amidst the ranking-Olympics (via D.Weinberger). It also has good resources for activism blogging, one of them is this guide to anonymous blogging.

Searching

The MIT Technology review ran an article about the difference in search functionalities between Yahoo and Google which is worth a read.  Advanced web search options are also upgraded with Yahoo including the CC search on Beta. There is also a personalised search option.

Stories from the digital frontier

The elements of digital storytelling by Mora Paul and Christina Fiebich are exploring the 'poorly charted territory' of the 'digital frontier'. They see that this 'dynamic new space for storytelling' exists merely as a potential yet. Their enlightening site provides the reader with a theoretical overview to establish a taxonomy, analyse the current practices and quantify the effects. In 'examples' the theory is explained via a lot of very good examples. This showcase of innovative story forms is best understood, after one has taken the time to cruise through the elements.
Gulf War 2 (aka World War 2.5) is such a dynamic design. Be aware, this Flash-game is about war, but once you get past the bangs, the characters and design inspire.
