The European study 'Effects of ski piste preparation on
alpine vegetation'
found that 'enlargement of ski pistes, machine-grading of ski piste
areas and increasing use of artificial snow' degraded the alpine
ecosystem.
One would think, that the same holds true for the Australian Alps
"Snow compaction and the removal of boulders and vegetation cover, the development of noisy ski fields, villages, car parks and roads have altered, reduced and broken up (the) Pygmy-possum habitat."
In an ancient oak forest in the mountains of West-Central Romania in
Rosia Montana it was planned to place Europe's largest open gold mine.
The Canadian-based company needed the 2,000 people relocated and 900
homes eliminated.
"The company plans to use hazardous cyanide compounds
to separate the gold and silver from the rock. The mine's waste rock
then would form a 185 metre-high dam across the Aries River valley,
immersing a nearby village. A hazardous cyanide storage pond, together
with tons of waste laden with heavy metals, would cover as many as 600
hectares or nearly 1,500 acres. As a result, the Aries River, the most
important water resource in the region, is at serious risk of
pollution, threatening the health and lives of 100,000 people."
Most of gold mining
involves the release of cyanide into our environment. The environmental
activist Stephanie Roth was just recently awarded the San
Francisco-based Goldman Environmental Prize for halting this project und thereby
preventing serious pollution and social dislocation.
Many Australians, like Bob Brown, Eileen Kampakuta Brown, Eileen Wani
Wingfield, Jacqui Katona and Yvonne Margarula were previously also
awarded the Goldmanprize for their grassroot environmental work.

Michael Krzyzanowski, World Health Organization European Centre for
Environment and Health is interviewed by Christian Gapp,
Telepolis about the
effects of air pollution in Europe. Particulate matter (PM), mostly of
road traffic is contributing to ill health and premature deaths.
"PM has a wide range of documented health effects. It starts with mild
effects like aggravating symptoms of respiratory diseases. PM
negatively affects the development of lungs in children and increases
the severity of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This results
in increased use of medication, more frequent consultation of
physicians and more hospital admissions. In some cases effects are
manifested in an increased number of deaths due to pulmonary and
respiratory diseases...There is no level under which exposure to PM is
not harmful"
M.Krzyzanowsk concludes that "any long-term solution must consider different modes of transport"
What is Sydney doing?
Online learning for post-secondary adults is provided via a single point of access by British Columbia Campus. The one-stop web-based gateway gives learners access to a large variety of resources. The “Education Planner lets students find information about all of B.C.’s 27 colleges, universities, institutes and university colleges.” Although it it primarily aimed at the local market, it also invites non-Canadians
The learner enroles with their 'home' institution and then has access to the B.C.Campuses' resource web. Its primary CMS is WebCT. The online learner community landscape is using collaborative hybrid media to simultate that 'campus' experience.
The large budget deficit of the United States runs up to three trillion dollars now. They are anxious to stabilise their currency, but can't stop their 'way of life'.
China and Japan bailed out the U.S. by almost four hundred billion dollars. They are acutely aware of their dependent position. Asian countries in turn hoard these falling dollars and assets. As long as they are motivated by self-interest, they won't drop the dollar...more detail in The New Yorker, by James Surowiecki

Die Online-Publikation Networx hat viele papers über web-und m-Kommunikation. In der Nr.39 geht es um ' Spam. Linguistische Untersuchung einer neuen Werbeform', Schmückle, Beat & Tobias Chi.
Medialanguage (Mediensprache) is calling for an international
networking project on the "Textual and linguistic aspects of blogging" The
site is concerned with language and communication on the web, in mobile
communication and as a tool for advertising.
"Target of the planned networking project is to draw up a comparative
linguistic and cultural study on textual and linguistic aspects of the
very young form of online-communication 'weblogging' or
'blogging'...Not only the parameters "individuality" and "archival
function" have crucial and constitutive importance but also the
"networking" element. By linking one blog with others, exchanging links
in form of a web-ring and by means of special blog-features such as
TrackBack or PingBack, a complex network is created, known as
blogosphere"
The due date for the project will be Sept. 2005 and it will be
published at the end of 2005. The site is in English and German.

The Sociable Media Group concerns itself with techno identity and sociable spaces in a networked world.
"We address such questions as: How do we perceive other people
on-line? What does a virtual crowd look like? How do social conventions
develop in the networked world?
Our emphasis is on design: we build experimental interfaces and installations that explore new forms of social interaction in the mediated world."
The SMG issues online papers on these topics ranging from 1999 till 2004. Many of the papers are very relevant to e-learning.
"Over the past 50 years, humans have changed ecosystems more rapidly
and extensively than in any comparable period of time in human history,
largely to meet rapidly growing demands for food, fresh water, timber,
fiber and fuel"
"Humans have increased the species extinction rate by as much as 1,000
times over background rates typical over the planet's history (medium
certainty)"
"10-30% of mammal, bird, and amphibian species are currently
threatened with extinction (medium to high certainty)"
"Approximately 60% (15 out of 24) of the ecosystem services evaluated
in this assessment are being degraded or used unsustainably"
"The degradation of ecosystem services often causes significant harm to
human well-being and represents a loss of a natural asset or wealth of
a country"
The full report results can be viewed
Additionally there are many resources on the site visualising the
actions of our species.

Nein, ich habe nichts geändert, es scheint an diesem Template 'dotty' oder so zu liegen..Benutze fast nur Firefox, ich wurde vom Internet Explorer user erst jetzt darauf aufmerksam gemacht.
The layout of this blog only works if you do not use Internet Explorer. It looks ok with Firefox, etc.
All problems are now solved, thanks to BlogHof 10.04.2005 sc
